The Granaries on Ołowianka Island

In consequence of war actions, most of the granaries in Gdańsk were destroyed. The walls of three of them were preserved on Ołowianka Island and, after their reconstruction in 1985, they became the main exhibition area for the Polish Maritime Museum. The oldest one is the Gothic ''Oliwski'' granary which was called 'Klasztorny' (Closter) until 1677. Its name originates from the Cistercian Order from Oliwa administering the granary. The Baroque granary 'Pann'' (Maiden) was named after a sculpture that used to stand on its top (first mentioned in 1709), and it was built in place of an older medieval granary called 'Szkarpawski'. Whereas the name of the 'Miedź' (Copper) granary comes from the type of goods that used to be stored there. At the front of each granary in Gdańsk there was a plaque attached (wooden or stone- craved) showing the warehouse’s name. Two such plaques have been preserved on the 'Oliwski' granary and they indicate years 1677 and 1738…
