The huge castle complex had been constructed by the middle of the fifteenth century and today it is still one of the biggest fortresses of medieval Europe .
The area of this complex is 21 ha. Passing over the moat and through the main gate, you will enter the courtyard of the Middle Castle. Here you can see the Grand Master’s palace - the place where the Grand Masters of the order used to live.
The castle complex was badly damaged at the end of World War II. The castle was reconstructed after the war and the reconstruction work is still continuing. This means that not all spaces and chambers are accessible for tourists. Some rooms hold different exhibitions presenting collections of ceramics, glass, armour and a large display of Baltic amber. The walking tour of the castle, with a local guide, takes about 2 hours.
