Cashubia is a term used for the land and people inhabiting the territory situated west of Gdañsk. The beginnings of Cashubia were connected with the dynasty of western Pomerania dukes in the tenth century.
The Cashubians have preserved to this day their own historical traditions, culture, language and literature.
The folk art of Cashubia is still expressed in their handicrafts, songs, music, dancing and dressing.
The Cashubian Lake District – a part of Pomerania - is a territory which was formed by glaciers.
It is a land of moraine hills (highest peak ‘Wieżyca’ - 329 m.), picturesque lakes (the biggest are: ‘Raduńskie’, ‘Ostrzyckie’ and ‘Wdzydze’), rapid streams and rivers. It all creates a beautiful landscape and that is why Cashubia is very interesting as a region for tourism and recreation. Its two main towns are Kościerzyna and Kartuzy .
The first part of the tour is a coach drive to Kartuzy, which takes about 30 minutes. In Kartuzy you will visit the regional Cashubian Museum displaying the equipment and tools of Cashubian farmers, pieces of furniture and examples of their cultural and religious traditions, such as embroidered cloth, ceramics, paintings and sculpture. You will also visit a former Gothic monastery church built there at the end of the fourteenth century. The furnishings of this church date from the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries. There are altars, chapels, richly carved stalls of the Carthusian monks, mainly in the Baroque style.
The tour then leads on to the a very nice Cashubian village Chmielno which is situated on three lakes, and is famous for the pottery workshop of the Necel family that has been running it for nine generations. Here you will see the production process, as well as have opportunity to buy typical Cashubian pottery. Finally, along the so called Cashubian Road , the tour continues to the Tri-City, passing the tranquil lakes, green meadows and thickly wooded slopes
